Candle Care
Ensure you always trim your wick to 1/4" long prior to lighting. If flame is unusually large, blow out your candle, trim and light again immediately.
For best results, allow your candles to burn for at least 2 hours for the first burn. Burn the candle for no longer than 4 hours at a time. Burning a candle for too little time will cause the wax to tunnel and burning your candle for too long is dangerous.
FAQs
What are your candles made from?
Our candles are hand-poured in Brighton using a natural coconut soy wax blend and high-quality fragrance oils and essential oils. They are non-toxic and clean burning.
What is a crackle wick candle?
A crackle wick candle uses a wooden wick instead of a cotton one. As it burns, the wooden wick can produce a gentle crackling sound, similar to a wood fire. This adds a cosy sensory layer to the candle experience and enhances the atmosphere.
How do I trim a wooden wick correctly?
For wood wicks, trim the wick to around 3–5 mm (about 1/8″) before lighting. This helps the candle burn more evenly, reduces excessive crackle, and prevents sooting or too‑large flames.
What’s the difference between wood wick and cotton wick candles?
- Wood wicks produce a subtle crackling sound and a broader flame, offering a unique ambience.
- Cotton wicks burn quietly and are the most common type used in traditional container candles.
Both can burn beautifully; the choice comes down to aesthetic preference and sensory experience.
Do natural candles burn cleaner?
Yes. Candles made from natural waxes like soy, coconut, or beeswax generally burn cleaner than paraffin. They produce less soot, fewer chemicals, and a more even burn — especially when crafted with quality ingredients and wicks designed for clean combustion. Natural candles are often preferred for indoor air quality.
Are the candles safe to use around pets and children?
Yes, our candles are made with non-toxic ingredients. However, as with any open flame, they should always be kept out of reach of children and pets.
How long do the candles burn for?
Each candle offers a long-lasting burn time of approximately 35–40 hours, depending on the size and how well the wick is maintained.
How long should I burn a candle for the first time?
For the best burn and scent throw, let your candle burn long enough that the full top layer of wax melts to the edges of the container — usually about 2–4 hours depending on size. This initial burn helps prevent tunnelling on future uses.
How do I stop my candle tunnelling?
Tunnelling happens when only the centre of the wax melts, leaving a ridge around the edges. To avoid it:
- On the first burn, let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the jar — this sets an even melt pool.
- Avoid burning for very short bursts; aim for at least 2–3 hours initially.
- Keep the candle away from drafts so the flame burns evenly.
Do you offer gift options or sets?
Yes, we offer discovery sets which make beautiful gifts. You can also include a personalised message at checkout.
How should I care for my candle?
Trim the wick to around 5mm before each burn and allow the candle to melt across the surface to avoid tunnelling. You can find more tips in our Candle Care guide.
Are your candles vegan and cruelty-free?
Absolutely. All of our candles are vegan-friendly and never tested on animals.
Can I reuse the candle jars?
Yes, once the candle has finished, the jars can be cleaned and repurposed as storage containers, plant pots, or decorative pieces.
Are Fair Cake Candles handmade in the UK?
Yes. Fair Cake Candles are lovingly hand‑poured by the maker, Uma, in her Brighton studio using high‑quality coconut soy wax and essential/fragrance oils. This artisanal process ensures each candle is crafted with care and intention.
Why is my candle wick mushrooming?
“Mushrooming” refers to a carbon build‑up at the tip of the wick that looks like a little black bulb. This usually happens when the candle burns too long, the wick is too long to start with, or there’s a draft. It can cause more smoke and uneven burning.
Why is my candle smoking?
Smoke can happen if the wick is too long, the flame has soot build‑up (like mushrooming), or there's a draft. Regularly trimming the wick and keeping the burning area draft‑free helps achieve a cleaner flame.
